Bob, my junker Valiant that I got, which I rebuilt, came with the SSB input port (SO-239) mising, so I used that hole for a fuse holder..perfect fit.. that a a 3-wire cord will make an easy improvement.
As for the VFO stiffness/lockup.... dunno.. these things are prone to a coupler problem, which I havent ran into yet, thankgoodness... my vfo dial is abit sloppy, but I am not going to mess with it until it fails..period.
I would suggest downloading the manual, if you havent already.  I have an Assembly manual, that was for the kit models, and it details on how to work putting that vfo together, etc.  Like I said, I havent messed with mine..yet..  Think I got that manual from BAMA site...really cant recall.
Anyway..good luck with it.... most of my problems were within the final tank circuit, where possibly a CB'er or someone else got in there and started hacking and swapping caps... otherwise it is original...I think.
