Hi all,
I just acquired a Viking Valiant that appears to be in fair shape and
has been recapped. The price was good so if I have to put some bucks
into it to get it where I want, I dont mind. The only issue which I have
a feeling looks to be a major one, is the VFO. I cant turn it. Acts as
if it is hitting something. Took the faceplate off to see if maybe
something was hitting the dial pointer but I wasnt so lucky. Its inside
the vfo box and that looks like a major undertaking to remove to even
see the variable cap completely to see what is going on. The previous
owner indicatrd he had "rebuilt" the coupler but I dont know exactly
what he means by that. So, that may be a problem. There are a couple of
big nuts holding the shaft on the front panel and I am wondering if I
were to loosen these, maybe it is too snug, or binding at the nuts, or?
I cant see any coupling in there due to the electronics covering almost
everything. I just dont want to start tearing it all apart and find it
might be fixable without going that far. I certainly dont want to force
it. I can see it rotate the variable just enough to see it move but it
just wont continue to turn. Anybody had any experience with this sort of
thing?
My second question is that the power cord does not have the standard
fused plug on the end so I am wanting to put a 3 wire cord on this thing
before I fire it up. Do I need to put some kind of fuse on this thing
then since the original plug had fuses in it? If so, what have some of
you done to accomplish this. I dont really want to drill a hole in the
chassis because this radio hasnt been modified in any way so I would
like to keep the integrity if possible. If the consensus is that it is
no big deal to drill a hole in the back and add a fuse holder, I will
contemplate that. Any suggestions.
Thanks-Bob-W0YBS
