Hello Brian Harris,
~ It's your radio but I wouldn't part it out if it were mine when so many
parts are still available and much of the satisfaction, at least to me, is
finding the right parts for the right price. You might look around for some
homebrew donor carcasses which can often be had for next to nothing. You
can always just take the output from the driver if you need lower power. I
can hardly wait to see the answers you're going to get.
As I said to Roy, it's scratch building that is the real thrill for me. I'm
planning a CW//AM exciter to drive a GG linear, and over on AMforever the
received wisdom is that you need about 25-30 watts to drive any of the tubes
you might want to use in an amplifier. Any more than that, and you need a
swamping resistor to bring the driver power down, as dialing the power down
on a Viking on AM doesn't work well---for some reason (?).
Cheers,
Brian Burns
P.S. I'm originally from W5 land, and was originally licensed as W5BRO in
South TX in 1953.
