Hi Joe,

The voltage rating is important and the orange drop cap would not cause hum on the audio just because of its construction.  The only critical aspect for this cap is the voltage rating and if the orange drop meets or exceeds that it should work fine.  

It sounds like something else is going on with your Ranger. Perhaps a mic connection was disturbed in the repair process? Are you sure  there is no hum on the carrier in CW mode?  Does the hum level vary with the mic gain level?

I have replaced this particular cap with various styles of HV caps in the past without any problem.  I have several Ranger and Ranger 2 transmitters used in my vintage radio setups.
