Hi Roy, Thanks for your comments and advice!! I don't recall the discussion about removing the whole VFO housing, may have seen several years ago. Yes I concur, it all comes down to the question of whether the insulated vfo tuning shaft exits the housing through a hole or a slot. If I see a slot, then I'm going to try and remove the whole housing if I have access to the spade lugs nuts on the bottom. I just want unfettered access to the vfo so I can look at solder connections, the variable capacitor, and untighten and retighten all the nuts and bolts in there, besides replacing the 18K resistor that IS burning up.
Oh, you bring up a really good point, maybe I can remove the three shield sides and leave the front side intact. I hadn't thought about it. I'll have to look at that vfo shield so see if it s construction allows that. I' m not going to get excited about that approach because it sounds nice and easy, and usually things aren't that nice and easy. There's likely going to be screws located in positions that can't be reasonably accessed.
Yes please send me the URL for the website with the vfo warble problem and solution. This one is warbling and on 80m too but at this point I don't know what it's caused by. Just getting into it now. I'm thinking either 18K resistor problem or bad grounding from 39 years of sitting on the floor.
Thanks for the reminder about the dual fused power cord. Sigh, I know better too. I am embarrassed to report that my Johnson Valiant, which I bought around 1995 or 96, still has the original dual fused power cord on it. Tsk Tsk Tsk... The Valiant is my main BA cw transmitter too so I use it quite a bit. I do need to get a 3 wire cord on that.
