[Johnson] Ranger 1 with no grid current

I'm glad you found the problem with the 68k resistor. That's the one I
was calling R8 or R6. If yours is R5, we have yet another variant of
the schematic.
This may not have happened to yours, but I would remove the bandswitch
shield under the chassis and check R9. I believe on mine that R9 was
cooked (split open, not visible from outside the shield) due to added
load from the bad R5/6/8, at any rate the 68k resistor. When I found
this it solved a host of problems from CW chirp to grid current.
Fortunately, for me, I only had the problem with R5/8/6, R9 and total
recapping. I haven't had to do any heavy-duty trouble shooting of the
type you describe.
I know there is vastly greater knowledge on the Johnson reflector than I
have but it has been dead lately.
There's much more activity on "AMFONE.net". I would try:
http://www.amfone.net/Amforum/index.php
There are Ranger questions all the time and I think you'll have better
luck there.
Good luck,
Harry
