I did exactly the same thing and it works great. In fact if you use 
banana jacks which fit equally as well you can use standard banana plugs 
which fit a little tighter.. I suppose you could even adjust the hole 
spacing and mount a dual banana jack. Of course that would make the 
purists among us upset.
