Bill,
Several years ago I acquired a Ranger and tore it down to the main chassis, 
washed it, replaced all the capacitors and many resistors.
It was well worth the effort.
Phil Salas,  AD5X has a great site for Ranger modes and hints.  I 
incorporated his PTT circuit.
