Subject: [Johnson] more Ranger adventures

Hi,
I haven't posted about my adventures with my Ranger #1 for a while. I
just got it up for the Stew Perry QSO party. I operated just over two
hours with the Ranger throttled back to QRP levels. I spent more time
working on the old radio than operating during the Stew. I had to remove
some parts to get at the spade bolts and nuts that hold the final shield
in place...and ground it. Then I struggled to get the parts back in with
all the nuts and hardware that hold all of those parts in place. That
cured the instability! I have a few more things to do to make the Ranger
play like it's supposed to on 40 and up...then a little bit of paint
work.
I put together a T/R relay box some years ago to use with my DX-100 and
I used the Ranger's relay output with the front panel switch to hook it
up with a receiver. I have been using transceivers for a long time and
only vaguely remembered how much fun it is to actually "operate"
separates <big grin>. My "side tone" last night was, of course, my own
transmitted signal in the receiver with it's antenna terminal shorted to
ground. It sounds great on 160 and 80.
73,
Bill KU8H
