Frank,
If you put the crystal/vfo switch in the zero position it should still key the VFO and exciter chain even with a key plugged in; if not the wiring needs to be corrected on this switch. The Valiant uses a shorting key jack (most vintages rigs do) so that the exciter chain is keyed when the jack is empty but if a key or keyer is plugged in then it must be closed or keyed for the exciter to work.

Hi Roger; I have already set my MFJ keyer to Grid Block keying and it
works fine.
My only problem is plugging in any key plug kills the grid reading on
the meter.
If I move Freq, I have to unplug the key plug in order to check the grid
currant.
