Gary,
The resistor is an 18K and is accessible from the left side of the VFO
(your left looking from the front) without taking apart the entire VFO.
There are two schools of thought on the resistor, leave it inside or
move it out of the enclosure. On the various Johnson transmitters here
I installed a higher wattage one and kept it inside the enclosure, my
belief is that the VFO is going to drift while warming up and the
resistor inside helps it get to a stable temperature more quickly. But
its like the Chevy/Ford arguments; either will get you from point A to
point B but I am sure there has been more than 1 shootings in country
bars over this topic.
Be careful with the insulating coupler in the VFO drive, the input and
output shaft sizes are different and it is difficult to find a
replacement if you break it. It is usually easy to repair the broken
part however. If the VFO tuning feels excessive stiff or gritty then
you probably need to take the ball reduction drive out for cleaning and
re-lube. You will need to remove the VFO escutcheon to get this part
out but it is pretty simple to do.
As for the holes, you are in good company. My 500 and Ranger 2 don't
have any extras for the VFO but most of the other Johnson rigs do. One
of my Valiants has a perfect cabinet but an extra control for RTTY shift
was added to the front so it could be worse. This Valiant was otherwise
perfect and was only $50 so I removed the control and replaced it with a
hole plug painted to match.
