[Johnson] Challenger Challenge

I picked up a Johnson Viking Challenger with a 6N2 VFO today.  The
transmitter has a lot of mods (antenna relay installed and some massive mod
that required a "VFO" switch on the front panel (yep, new hole and all).
Any ideas on what the mod might me?  My plan is to dekunk it and put it back
all original.  J-B Weld fill the hole nicely.

Any thoughts from the experts?
