[Johnson] Plate/Grid meter stick: Suggestions?

I think it is a characteristic of suicidal ShurRite (sp??) meters, the 
poor things beat themselves to death.  Heathkits do it too.  I have one 
Adventurer with the original meter, the others have replacements.
