[Johnson] Plate/Grid meter stick: Suggestions?

I run my Johnson Adventurer nightly and it is the second one I have owned. This one (as well as its predecessor) exhibited an anomaly with the plate/grid current meter. In the "plate" position, the needle sticks and meter face has to be lightly tapped with a finger or free it up...so my 10-cent fix has been to run it in the "grid" position. Lately I have been working a station that runs a Knight T-50, which is pretty much identical to the Adventurer and he experiences the same phenomenon. I have never been much for screwing around with the delicate movements of meters but I am wondering if anyone knows of any fixes to improve the damping of this floppy, jerky, sticky meter? Thanks!
