   Well, you're probably right.  I intend to keep the Valiant no matter 
what - but it's obvious I'm going to want to put more watts into the 
feedline than is available from 3 6146s.  I was going to see if I could 
keep to one marque, but looks like the amplifier will be another brand - 
Henry, Ameritron - etc.  And I have an Elmac AF-67 that would make a dandy 
exciter for some as-yet-undiscovered amp.

   The question still remains - why is the Valiant so cranky at low power

   Alas, not possible. I run a 400' loop NVIS around my back fence, 
balanced feedline into a tuner, thence to the Valiant. CC&Rs prevent much 
more.  I could ground-mount an all-band vertical, but I'm in northern 
Nevada, the ground is very dry and exceedingly hard, and the lighting can 
be unmerciful at times, not to mention the wind and snowstorms..
