I adjusted the slider and increased the screen current AND replaced the 6AQ6. It works perfectly now. Tunes smooth, sounds good and I get about 60 watts into the antenna (I think that should be about right for a Ranger).
 
Without your help, I would have likely spent hours before stumbling onto the solution.
 
Glen, the 6AQ6 that tested good...it was bad. As soon as I put a replacement in...a big change. Guess that you can't always believe the tube tester (and I have a good one).
