Peter I agree with what you are saying but at least the code requirement
kept those who were unwilling to make the commitment to learning the code
from entering the ranks. It's a self discipline thing. A lot of what a
college student learns in 4 to 6 years of college is never used again during
his or her career but it was the discipline that earned the right of
passage. Once you have worked that hard to achieve your goal you are much
less likely to do stupid things to put it at risk. Most things that come
easy have little real value!
I've heard the generation entering the job market today are called the
"Entitlement Generation". They feel that they are entitled to what the
25-30 year employee has earned going in on day one. I guess it's some of
that same kind of thinking with the licensing. Everyone wants an Extra
Class license for a 25 question test. Plop down a few Kilobucks on a new
whiz bang rig and some antenna hardware and hit the airwaves. Many times it
probably turns out to be quite unfulfilling.
It's not going to help revive the hobby....it might in fact be it's death if
some serious policing and enforcement is not applied. Much like we went to
VE's for license testing we should also maybe have volunteer enforcement
within the hobby that is empowered to manage the impending violations and
degrading of the hobby through the application of technology.
Just my 2 cents worth....
Cecil...
