[Johnson] What about a Ranger?

"You've got the right idea with the Ranger. The Valiant has somewhat 
restrictive iron that limits its ability to make nice, full, pleasing 
audio. Major surgery is involved, transformer transplants and all that.

They don't sound bad, just not as good as the Ranger."

It's bot too  hard to get a Valiant to sound better. You can skip 
replacing the transformer(s)
if you A) Remove the CLIPPER circuit. On mine, I just pulled the tube 
and wired a cap across there.
(you can't just turn it opff becaiuse those diodes will degrade your 
audio even with the clipper turend off)

B) Increase the size of teh coupling caps in the speech amp, and
C) Remove that cap across the secondary of the mod transformer.

Next thing you know you have hi-fi audio compared to before.

Oh I am sure you can do fanicer things, and add negative feedback etc. 
but those
three steps above gave mine really pleasant audio.
