Hey Folks,

My name is Cecil and I have joined the ranks. I have always wanted
a Johnson transmitter and over the weekend my dream came true. (I've heard
you should be careful what you wish for...HA!)

Anyway it's a non-functional Ranger. It's complete as far as I can
tell...the problem is it has stuff that I don't think belongs there. I want
to see this thing up a going again so will probably have questions as new
guys do...

A little background...I have been doing restorations on boatanchor receivers
for several years so I do have a pretty good background in the art just not
in things Johnson.

My first question is whether there are parts sources for these things. Not
that I need anything I know of at this point but I am sure I will as I go
through this thing. I haven't checked out the iron yet but if looks are any
indication I'm encouraged. They are clean with only very little surface
rust on the laminations of one transformer.

Down side...the detents are worn completely off a couple of the positions of
the mode switch. (left of VFO) Lots of use I guess. The choke on the plate
of the PA tube has burned up at some point and somebody tacked a substitute
across the old one after stripping off the burnt windings. Ugly!

Part of the power supply is solid stated....still has the 5U4 though...

Has a relay socket mounted on the top side of the chassis with a plug in
plastic case relay that has melted down due to the heat in the cabinet
during operation I'm sure. Again Ugly!

Looks like there has been a good bit of heat in the VFO section. I
understand there are some mods to get rid of some of that heat.

Anyway...I guess I need to be pointed to a good repository of info on what
should be done to this thing and especially some pictures of what one is
suppose to look like on the inside so I can tell the original from the
modified stuff.

Thanks for all your help in advance!
