[Johnson] Johnson R3 Issues

I've been reading the mail on the R3 resistor issue with interest. I have a Valiant that I purchased a few years ago but it hasn't seen much service, although it works well. I wanted to start checking into my local AMI net on a regular basis but I'm beginning to think I should press my Viking l or ll into service. I hate to risk damaging the Valiant until I have time to swap that resistor and of course when the cabinet is removed, I'll come up with other issues. I don't have time for a "project" in the next couple of months.
It sounds like an ugly failure (R-3) although I haven't found the pictures of previous disasters. Any recommendations?..
