Dear Mr. Swynar: I really appreciate you pointing out the two 22 ohm
resistors (R33 & R34) in the plate leads of the 807 modulator tubes to our
attention. However, it appears to be incorrect to state that the stock Viking
II did not have these. In my Johnson Catalogue No.714 (FORM 714M064) the
schematic shows those two resistors, R33 and R34 in the plate lead of the 807
modulators of the Viking II in the standard model. I presume they were
included on the CDC model. They are shown as resistors only, not as parasitic
suppressors although that may be their function at audio frequencies. If you
acquired a Viking II without R33 & R34, I suspect they were removed by a
previous CB operator who wanted his transmitter to "talk louder"? Also, I
just noticed that the list price of the Viking II(standard model) was $279.50
in kit form and $337.00 wired and tested amateur net. The Viking II CD model
wired and tested was $61.00 more at $398.00. The Catalogue states" The
transmitter is housed in dark maroon wrinkle finished desk cabinet, 10-7/8" x
13-3/16"x 20", weight when assembled is approximately 65 pounds. Front panel
has a matching gray and maroon two tone finish. The skirted knobs furnished
with the kit were designed especially for the Viking and accent it is
finshed, commercial appearance." Both models were an unrecognized and
unappreciated bargain! I would like to know more about the Viking II made for
the Royal Canadian Air Force. I suspect that it may be made exactly the same
as the United States F.C.D.A. C.D. model? So far the only diffferences that I
can detect for the C.D. model compared to the standard model are: 1.Full
transmit coverage from 1.8 to 30.0 mcs, 2. Cadimum plated chassis instead of
copper plating, 3. Modulation Limiter added. 4. Wired for "push-to-talk"
operation with a three pole mic. connector on front panel, 5.Certified to the
U.S. F.C.D.A. and listed in Issue no.1 of "Certified Radio Equipment" and
qualified for matching funds. From my investigation, this appears to be the
only difference between the standard and the CD model. Should anyone know of
any other difference, please let me know. -73- Sherrill W. k4own.

Alan et al,

The "stock" Viking II & the gov't spec'ed "CDC" and the Royal Canadian Air
Force "CC" differed in other suble ways, not the least of which was the
circuitry in the audio chain...

I own a fine example of what is probably the rarest of the breed, i.e. the
"CC"---the schematic for the "CC" calls for parastic suppressor resistors in
the plate leads of the 807 modulator tubes, whereas the stock V-2 does not.
Curiously, my "CC" had these resistors removed when I got the rig last
year---and the audio was absolutely HIDEOUS (distorted, etc.).

The inclusion of these parts was the first BIG step in making the "CC" sound
like good plate modulated AM rig should...
