And just to add a little discussion to the story about stock audio in the 
Viking II … I modified mine easily by converting the modulators to true, 
honest Class B … by building a real bias supply and regulating the screens 
on the 807s. It was a quick fix, but for the first time, the fool 
transmitter finally had enough audio to properly modulate the kind of 
carrier the finals are capable of. There are many other refinements that can 
be made, but this made a whale of a difference. As a stock transmitter, the 
807s just didn’t have the headroom to modulate the signal to 100%. It was a 
couple of years later that I saw the modification articles in ER, and like 
others on this list, I agree that those are an absolute must-read for anyone 
wanting to modify their Viking II. – WB5NEN
