Gentlemen: To answer the question by Mark, W1EOF, I will quote a few
sentences from the August, 1998 issue of ELECTRIC RADIO MAGAZINE, page 30,
the Article entitled Viking II Modifications-Revisiting a Legend Part 3.
"Parts 1 and 2 of this article covered audio modifications for the Viking II
that will give you nearly broadcast quality audio. The last part of this
article series on the Viking II will offer something for CW operators.
It is unfortunate that a stock Viking II has such crummy sounding audio, and
such a dirty, clicky CW signal. I think for these reasons, it never quite
earned the respect that it should have. Back in 1951 when this rig was
designed, Johnson clearly didn't feel that it was necessary to pay attention
to some of the details that we today consider important. Instead, TVI
suppression was the problem of the day.
But, as you saw in Parts 1 and 2 of this article, the good news is that the
Viking II few audio shortcomings are easily remedied without tearing apart
the entire rig. Its straightforward, basic design and heavy duty components
just make it an outstanding candidate for restoration and modification.
Viking II's have even been used in radio stations as either their main or
backup broadcast transmitter." ....... This is as much of the beginning of
the last (August, 1998) of the three part articles as time and space will
allow me to quote here. The three articles were written by Mr. Thomas Bonomo,
K6AD. Mr. Bonomo shows the Viking II before and after cw waveforms and there
is quite an improvement! I seriously recommend that everyone on this email
list should be a subscriber to ELECTRIC RADIO MAGAZINE. I have been a
subscriber for over 10 years and have all of their issues going back to the
first issue, I think it was circa 1989(?). - 73- K4OWN.
