[Johnson] My poor sick Viking II

The older Johnson transmitters and the 6146B/6146W
(the 6146W made after 1964 is a 6146B equivalent)
don't usually get "along" very well! The 6146B is
much more likely to "take off" with VHF parasitics
than the 6146/6146A/8298. The 6293 works fine in
place of the 6146/6146A/8298.

For the article on the 6146 family of tubes that was
published in Electric Radio a while back and in the
Collins Collectors' Association newsletter go to
either of the websites listed at the end of this
E-Mail. There is much more explanation about the
differences between the 6146B and the rest of the
family.

You can find 6293 tubes from various sources on the
Internet for less than $22 each. Also, don't bother
with "matched pairs" of tubes. The finals in most
equipment are run in parallel not push-pull (where
matching might provide a little - but not much -
benefit). After several hours of operation the tubes
are no longer matched anyway! Also, none of the
manufacturers provided "matched pairs" with their
equipment when it was new. That should tell you
something!

The Viking II does not have any neutralization
adjustments is there any problem using the newer
6146B's and W's. It really doesn't matter to me
either way except the 6146W is just a touch easier to
find, if not the 6293 is available from RF parts for
22.00 bucks each.
