You, sir, are correct. If you hear the other station bending that S-meter to the far right past 10 dB but are hearing 'em "squeak", you should tell them to turn up that mic gain. Cal.

running AM appear to have their "Mic gain" set for considerably less than

It seems like all these old rigs with high level modulation should sound
much better than that. Of course this isn't true of everyone, I do hear
some well modulated rigs out there that sound like they're pushing close to
100%, good audio etc.
