Hi.
Since getting the Viking Ranger/Hammarlund HQ-110 on line and operating
properly I've been doing a modest amount of AM operation, primarily on 10M.
My question is this. It seems that a very large percentage of people
running AM appear to have their "Mic gain" set for considerably less than
100% modulation. All too often I hear/see a tremendous carrier on the S
meter that really knocks the background noise down. However, the Audio
often appears to be quite weak in comparison, often making the person on the
other end sound like they're "mumbling in their beard".
It seems like all these old rigs with high level modulation should sound
much better than that. Of course this isn't true of everyone, I do hear
some well modulated rigs out there that sound like they're pushing close to
100%, good audio etc.
