I changed out all of these porcelain plugs. The problem I have seen in the
Johnson rigs if the center screw is over tightened it cracks the socket in
half, so when you plug the Rig in a turn in on BLOOOOOM! I also do not like
how little the porcelain material extends from the holes it is very easy to
touch the chassis as you are inserting the plug. The use of a Crystal
socket is not the best solution because they crack down the middle if over
tightened, and hanging out the back like they do they are easy to damage
when moving the rig. Which you don't need because when you move one of these
transmitters there is a price to pay, smashed fingers, hernia's,
blasted backs, blood; you are already speaking in tongues why make it worse

I replaced the relay sockets on both the Viking I and II with the following.

two #3542 pin tip jacks
two #5173 Pin tip plugs

the ones I am using come from the outfit below.

The pin tip jacks fit in the holes without modification and each are secured
by a nut with lock washer, the solder lug is easy to get to it is long but I
placed some shrink to fit tubing over it and it looks great. They come in
white (used here to match the original) red, and black. The tough
plastic extends a safe distance from the chassis, and it looks like the
original
plug from the outside.
