I know for a fact the military bought DKs for clandestine operations during
the Vietnam War. I had a friend run one of these stations over there. (I
can't remember his name or call and I no longer know where he lives or where
I met him. I don't even remember what he looked like and havent seen him in
over 20 years. It's funny how you forget certain things over time and don't
forget other things)! He was a ham and his job was to run the ham station.
Only thing was he had a script and was really broadcasting and not really
talking to anyone. He would call CQ on the ham bands, using a designated
frequency and then answer a non existant station per the script and and act
as though he was having a QSO with the station. The script was really a
coded message being broadcast to an operative somewhere. My friend was
given these scripts to broadcast on designated ham band frequencies daily.
He used one of these Desk Kiliwatts to do all this.
