[Johnson] Ranger VFO coupling

I'm pretty sure (sigh) I have a busted flex coupling on the VFO shaft of one
of my Ranger I's. Either that or something is slipping inside the VFO
chassis. The VFO is stuck on one freq, even though the vernier drive appears
to be working fine. The coupling, of course, is inside the case, which
appears to be non removable. Is there a sequence of Chinese jigsaw puzzle
steps I should know to get at this thing? I've had front panels off before,
and have pulled the side cover on several to do the 18K resistor mod and
replace some tubes, but never had to go any further inside the VFO, which
does NOT appear to have a removable cover. I don't recall if the side plate
will give access to the coupling or not. What's the secret? Will pulling the
top plate with the springy thingies on it allow access to the coupling? I
can do that if need be, have done it once or twice years ago and got away
with it then.
