All:
No doubt you've been reading closely on my Ranger restoration. So far, things have been going along quite handily. I found a place in Lansing, MI that has boatanchor quality replacement parts. So, I don't have to keep on filling out order sheets to Antique ES. It's a place called Fulton Electronics and at least one of the personnel on staff is a ham. Woo hoo!
Back to the Ranger...I did a wholesale changeout of as many of the suspect/questionable components on the rig. Both h.v. and l.v. capacitors have been changed out to Xicon 100 uF 450 vdc replacements. On the h.v. side of the house, all I did was use a couple of these babies in series and used terminal strips to mount the caps were the old Aerovox unit used to hang out. Additionally, I used a pair of 100kohm 1 watt resistors to balance out the voltage across the caps. On the 18 kohm resistor, I use another terminal strip to mount the 20k ohm 5 watt resistor just below the main chassis. I will excise the old 18 k resistor, solder and pigtail twist a pair of red wires to the amputationAll:

On the 18 kohm resistor, I use another terminal strip to mount the 20k ohm 5 watt resistor just below the main chassis. I will excise the old 18 k resistor, solder and pigtail twist a pair of red wires to the amputated stubs, and bring them out to the 20k ohm resistor on barrier strip located below via the existing grommet where the power leads to the VFO pass through.
There some other questionable things I'm going to change out: the plate blocking cap to from the 6146 to the SO-239 (I had one that failed before).
Now for the question: been looking at Willie Nelson's guitar. It's a worn item just below the acoustic hole. Also, there are many hot rods that seem to be going to the primer/beat up look. After I sent off my panel to Dee Almquist and installed a substitute panel that was slightly rusted up, that had a hole in the front panel, and wear marks on some of the rotary switches (not to mention a rusted in call sign of a previous ham "W4HOP"), I was rethinking my decision to put back in a refinished panel. Hmmmm....what about leaving it "historically" alone? Whaddya think?
Cal, N6KYR.
