All:
Been reading the f.b. on my Ranger resto. Many thanks. Just wanted to answer a few of the questions I saw on the posts:

-One can use Brasso metal polish to polish plastic. Works absolutely great! Should work well on the Ranger dial (in fact, that's what I've been using to spruce up knobs on a Ranger II).

-If the VFO insides are "shaky", there are four aluminum posts with threaded inserts that use bolts to secure them to the main chassis.

-I can see where the VFO/18k ohm resistor may be causing problems. Apparently, that resistor is NOT robust over the long haul to handle the power demands set by the VFO. Hence my retrofit to a 20k 5W power resistor for the purpose (note here that I chose the 20k of the 18k because ANT.E.S. doesn't have an 18k resistor).

Finally a question: what would cause a perfectly good 6AX5 tube to arc and short? I suspect a short circuit but otherwise, let me know. FYI, I found that the l.v. 30 uF/450 VDC filter cap was clipped on the ground end. This would cause the power supply to produce pulsating D.C. but I don't think the 6AX5 would short as a result. Am I right or wrong on that? Thanks. Cal, N6KYR.
