All:
Just wanted to say "thanks" for the fb with regards to the 18k resistor. I have since ordered some 20k 5watt resistors.

Here's what happened so far: I tried firing up the xmtr last Saturday. All seemed well until I saw arcing and sparking in the 6AX5 rectifier. Well, I tried replacing the 6AX5 with a new military surplus unit. Same results but in effect, I ended up damaging the tube. I stopped any more power on checks and did some resistance checks. The arc turned out to short the filaments to the cathode. What I suspect is that one of the tubes or circuits fed by the l.v. p.s. is shorting after the tubes warm up. On the 6AQ5 current protection tube for the 6146, a 005uF cap on the screen grid had bubbly wax around it. This cap is suspect and at first I thought this may have been the culprit until I saw the schematic and found it was a bypass for the h.v. p.s. coming from that 20 kohm power resistor. But I never in my who BA "career" did I crack open an EFJ Ranger/VFO. We'll see what happens when I take off the front panel and excise the VFO out of its lair. To be continued.

Cal, N6KYR.
