Cal: If the 6AX5 has arch'ed internally , it should be tested on a tube
tester as it may have been damaged. Sounds like you are making progress on
your Ranger!- 73- Sherrill W. k4own.

All:
Decided to pull apart the VFO yesterday. Didn't see any physical problems.
The 18 kohm resistor is in good shape but under the advisement of some, I
have chosen to excise that unit and opt for an external-to-the-VFO mount of a
20kohm 5 watt unit. Additionally, I did test the 6AU6 and 0A2 tubes. The VR
tube tested fine (according to my TV-7A/U t.t.). But the 6AU6 was a very dead
number. Nary a peep on the test meter of the t.t. I had preemptively ordered
an extra 6AU6 and OA2 a few days before from Antique E.S. I also ordered a
handful of .005 uF ceramic discs to replace some of the questionable looking
items. I also have a spare panel and cabinet ready to ship off to PNT for his
silk screening/refinishing magic.

Other than that, I'm still not clear what was causing the arcing of the 6AX5
rectifier tube. I will continue doing various cap replacements and doing the
chart resistance checks in accordance with the manual. If everything works
out, I hope to have a station set up sometime in September/October. Cal,
N6KYR.
