I would like to thank everyone fer your encouragement and help with the
smoking Valiant.

I found the trouble in a so239 connector in a old heathkit antenna switch.

Both the SO239's (antenna common) and the xmtr connectors were bad.
The insulation was melted from the center of the SO239 and then arced to the
other shield.

I guess my stuff getting old just like me.
Now I do it the old fashion way, unscrew the Pl 259's when I change the
antennas.
Note:  I don't normally work up on the AM portion on the band,  it too high,
I get nose bleeds HI HI.
