Steve:There was (you guess it) another article in Electric Radio that showed modifications of the Desk KW for 160 meters. It was Gary Gompf of Oklahoma who did such a modification by adding button caps, a high voltage relay, and extra inductance to the tank circuit via a large toroid cap. However, you also have to keep in mind that you must use a power reduction t-pad into the T-bolt or lower the final amp power of the Ranger via a power reduction circuit (yet another ER mod) because the Thunderbolt will not take more than 5 or so watts input to it's grid driven network. Or...you can use any conventional HF amp to do AM duty for the Ranger. No fuss or muss with power reduction units or T-pads. Just plug in, set up your PTT relays to key the amp and go. Just be sure to lower the driving power of the Ranger so that the power output of the amp doesn't exceed 25% or so of the max power output of the amp. Reason: most amps these days are designed around ICAS duty cycle (SSB/CW) operation and won't run the full 700-1000 watts out continuous duty (hey yet another Electric Radio article on the subject by Bill Kleronemos, KD0HG). Besides, 125-200 watts is plenty for good solid AM "kewso" ops. FWIW. Cal, N6KYR.

Ranger that works on 160?
