[Johnson] Mutilation of otherwise very nice looking Pacemaker

What in the name of Edgar J. and Ethel Johnson do you suppose that extra knob 
is for on the Pacemaker that is currently listed on ebay?  Looks like the 
culprit used a Johnson knob to control "something" in the shadowy box behind 
the panel on the the left side (right side in the rear view.....).  My 
Pacemaker (in 1963, foolishly sold when I went off to college) didn't have 
such a mod .... does anyone recall seeing reference to a mod which would 
produce this result?
