Remember that the tolerances on the old capacitors
were usually -50% / + 80%, which means that they could
actually be as low as 4 mfd or as high as 14.4 mfd.
Newer capacitors are +/- 20%. 22 mfd 450 volt
capacitors are available from Mouser for as little as
62 cents apiece! Putting 2 in series will give a
nominal capacitance of 11 mfd. Allowing for +/- 20%,
this will mean that the actual capacity will be
between 8.8 mfd and 13.2 mfd, well within the range of
the original value of 4 mfd to 14.4 mfd.
The Mouser part number on the 62 cent capacitors is
140-XRL450V22
They have other 22 mfd at 450 volt 20% tolerance
capacitors for varying costs up to $2.24 each. I have
used numerous of their lower priced lines and have had
no problems at all.
Mouser is on-line at mouser.com and you can order
on-line using a credit card. There is no minimum
order for USA orders.
