Hi,

I am just starting to restore a Ranger I and haven't noticed any sparking.
However, since this the main switch, there is a considerable inductive kick
possible from the power transformer when the rig is powered up. This would
depend on which cycle the line was in when you turned the switch and other
factors.

The very best way to take care of this if it bothers you enough to worry
about the longivity of the switch is to use relays to handle the load. I
have just added this feature to a Brand X (Drake) L-4B and L-7 amp, both of
which use a combination switch which is no longer manufactured and is near
impossible to find sans buying a parts rig and hoping that the switch is
still good.

I have heard about fellows placing caps across the contacts, but it would
appear to my limoted knowledge that there would be an extra kick from
charging the cap, too.

For my money, relays are cheap and plentiful and require no head scratching
to install.
