Wow some excellent replies and info so far! Yeah Ed perhaps I should
have made it post-1928 ham bands as your right when we had everything
from 200 meters through ultraviolet I suppose we could have considered
many early superhets to be ham band receivers, hi. I have always wanted
to own a Wireless Specialty Company receiver, but then it would always
come down to "do I want to pay the mortgage for the next six months or
own a WS receiver". The wife always sided with the mortgage - spoil sport!
Bob you were thinking the same thing I was about Hallicrafters. I don't
think there was a ham band (160-10M bands) only receiver before the
SX-101 series. That was actually my first Novice receiver too.
And wonderful research Jim. Man you must have the Moore book memorized,
hi. True Moore even wrote "First hamband only receiver?" in the Tobe
Model H description. Funny thing is I remember now seeing that Ross
receiver in my earlier look through of the Moore book. I also agree
since the FB-7 and HRO's did offer the SW coils then they shouldn't be
considered ham band only.
So I need to modify the National claim to read as follows:
"National - The Maker of the First Post 1928 Ham Band Assignment Only
Superhet Receivers that I'd have any chance in hell at owning today"
How's that sound, hi hi. (Important note: If one of the receivers in
Jim's list unexpectedly arrives on my doorstep I will forever forget the
pursuit of this crazy National claim.)
BTW has anyone every seen or owned one of the receiver in Jim's list?
That Tobe seems to have a tube line up that would have made it a pretty
respectable receiver assuming they had good mechanical construction.
The triple-tuned IF transformer might even have helped in making it
somewhat selective. It appears that all the Tobe receivers were
essential one model in different clothing and made during those few
mid-30's years.
I love this group! Such vast knowledge of radios past.
