If my memory is correct, the 3-pin arrangement is used with a set of
low-frequency coils. I recall that Millen had offered a set of LF coils
when the 90651 GDO was a hot item on every ham's Christmas list... I'm not
absolutely sure that the LF coils had some sort of shield or a tap that
required a ground connection.
