INARRL BULLETIN 086-2002
12:45 PM 11/11/02 DE KA9QWC
SUBJECT: WHITLEY COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO CLUB (WCARC) NOVEMBER
PROGRAM
YOU ALL ARE WELCOME
The WCARC will meet this coming Thursday, November 14, 2002 in
the basement of the Whitley County Jail in Columbia City, Indiana
at 7 PM local time.
Our guest speaker for the evening will be Philip M. Taylor,
W0LJL.
Phil Taylor grew up in the railroad town of Topeka, Kansas. He
has been around trains most of his life.
As a teenager he learned train photography from William A.
Gibson, a noted railroad photographer in the area, and began
taking train pictures.
He later started college, but left to work for the Santa Fe
Railroad as a Locomotive Fireman, the first step to becoming an
Engineer.
After the railroads eliminated firemen on diesel locomotives in
1964, he returned to school to become another type of engineer.
He is currently a Senior Engineer in optics at Raytheon.
Phil is on the Board of Directors of the Three Rivers Railroad
Heritage Council, in Fort Wayne and still takes an occasional
train picture.
At the urging of K3DCK, Phil recently got his Technician license
and adopted his fathers long time call of W0LJL, through the
vanity call program. He has passed the written test for his
General Class and is hoping to pass his code soon.
His presentation will be entitled "Not So Long ago and Not So Far
Away" and will be about his experiences as a young photographer
documenting the last days of mainline steam locomotives and early
diesel locomotives.

I think the railroad past and present depending upon your era
has to bring back memories that register as part of our American
history and way of life. For us old timers it is a memory that is
slipping away, but these events sure can revive some of the past
we can enjoy.
