Perhaps you are over-reacting here? I do not know anyone who is currently a
ham
who would feel that 73 is an obscure message. If you are really really
really worried
about it then do not use it. And if you are worried more than that? Write to
Mr. Hollingsworth,
I am sure he will ease your mind and probably even sign 73 in his reply to
you.

If you do a further search on the ARRL website and look in the NTS
MPG-MESSAGE FORMAT
pdf file, you will see a TON of "sample" messages and none that I saw did
not include 73 in the
ending salutation.

Where the mixed group reads Originated 3, Received 5, Sent 6, Delivered 2.
Zeros in any category should be preserved to maintain clear the meaning of
the 4 entries in the mixed group, as in 0/5/6/0. The use of 73 is optional.


Not to mention the thousands of times that 73 is signed by ARRL and ARRL
staff.
