The South Carolina QSO Party allows FT8 QSOs and they came up with what I
thought was a novel way of running FT8, at least when I first heard about
it.
Stations operating FT8 were told to use the Field Day module within
WSJT-X. Stations outside of South Carolina sent 1D plus their section, and
stations within SC sent a FD exchange that indicated their SC county. If
you were in Charleston County, for example, you sent 10A SC where 10A was
an alias for Charleston County. You submitted your FT8 log along with your
CW/SSB to the contest sponsor; the contest sponsor would convert all of the
aliases to the proper states/counties, combine the SSB/CW logs with the FT8
logs for each station, and then they scored the whole thing.
However, there have been surprisingly few FT8 QSOs made. From the
published results for 2024:
• 406 logs received 59 in-state logs – 347 out of state logs
• 27,468 QSOs were reported
• QSOs: 13,760 CW, 13,532 PH and 176 DG
So, about 1/2 of 1% of all QSOs were FT8 QSOs. Hardly worth doing, IMO.
