[ILQSO] On Lake Carlyle...

I live about 30 min from Carlyle, and have been on it MANY times. If there
is even a breath of wind, the lake is crazy. So, unless you are immune to
sea sickness, several hours anchored...yikes!

There was a maritime mobile in the Cal QSO Party for several years who
anchored at a 4-county corner west of San Francisco. Given my propensity for
motion sickness, I don't even want to THINK about it....

If you are serious about doing this someday, you might just nose around in
the area of the lake and see if someone else has a boat that would rent
for a more reasonable figure. Not sure how large a craft you would need, and
I'm sure it would depend upon the wind and weather; one might have great
plans and be derailed by winds high enough to make the whole operation
unsafe.

Interesting thought, nevertheless.

Tnx, Danny:

Two items concern me.

1. I looked at renting a pontoon boat from one of several of the nearby
marinas - they all say the boat must be returned by 7 p.m. That's 0100Z The
ILQP times say I could operate until that time but I need at least 30
minutes or so to motor back to the dock and check in. Guess this isn't
insurmountable, since I'm never in real contention for a plaque.

2. The pictures of the pontoon boats I see wouldn't provide much
protection from the weather. When I was at the Champaign, Vermillion, Douglas,
Edgar county corner I about froze because of low 40's temperatures and 30+ MPH
winds. I had to move into my automobile every couple hours to warm up for
15 minutes or so. :) These olde bones are even a bit more creaky that 5
years or so ago when I was there!

The upside - the Corps of Engineers say the lake is quite shallow, so
anchoring at or near the county intersection would be possible.
Downside - $400 per day plus fuel is outside my usual budget for such an
expedition, but there are always exception. Maybe I could find a willing
ham who has a pontoon boat to loan for less? :)

Lettuce c what happens in the next couple years. Maybe I could be the
first county line Maritime Mobile (not really, to be Maritime Mobile one needs
to be outside the territorial waters of a sovereign country,) but.....

You've got me thinking.

(http://www.w9awe.org/ILQP%20FAQ%20Page.html) was one cannot operate from a structure, such
as a bridge, over a river or stream (safety issues). It does say some
awards programs do not recognize operation from a "wet" county line, it says
nothing at all about operating on lake in a boat (or otherwise). I was under
the impression no "wet" county lines were allowed, but it appears that is
not correct. I know of a county line on the Sangamon Rover where you could
activate a couple of semi-rare counties, Mason and Menard.

operate from a county line or multi-county corner, regardless of antennas. I am
pretty sure you only qualify for Rover if you operate from more than one
location.
