As far as gimmicks, I tend to agree with you for the most part.  I think it was Tennessee that sent me a certificate for the first year I participated in their QSO Party, and I thought that was sort of interesting, if nothing else it shows I partcipated.  I think there's a number of us who will probably never win a State QSO Party due to limitations of antennas, power, radios etc. but we still enjoy the fun of participating.  What I do think would be nice is a certificate stating how many verified counties you worked in the state QSO party you participate in.  Then each year you could attempt to beat your old record, and work at least one more county.  But as far as spelling out the name of the state using the 1x1 call suffix, and being charged $5 for S&H was a bit much.  If you really think about it, how much of a challenge would it be to spell IOWA or OHIO.  Now Massachusetts would give me a migraine.
