Well started out to be a good contest or at least I thought it would
be. Had everything all set up and ready to go, switched from my 80m
dipole to the 40m and hit the auto tuner. No Luck, huh <I thought>, so
I did some investigating no luck again. Oh well probably a problem
with the auto tuner, dug the old tuner out of the closet no luck
either. Put the manual tuner <it is a roller incductor> on the 80m and
proceeded to load it up on 40m no luck either. So I figure it is time
to approach this from a different angle, out to the garage dig out the
old 40m dipole & stare at the tower in the 20mph winds. Oh Well I want
to get on the air climb the tower hook one end at about 30' and slope
the other down to a tree. Back to the garage to find some coax <darned
I know I put it somewhere> finally find some real old stuff but it had
two connectors on it. Hook it up, pull the antenna tight and head to a
window with the coax, in the house I go with it comes up about 6'
short of the rig, back to the garage to find a short section, no luck.
Take short section off of the beam. Tried to tune this no luck, find
bad coax. Hook the beam up and get on 20m not much there about 15
contacts and band goes out. On to 80m a few more contacts and dries up
hunt and pounce util the only ones I hear I have worked. Call it a
day. Me and Mr Murphy had a great contest and we'll be back next year.
Hopefully on 40m.
