[ILQSO] IQP thoughts

I have tried to take advantage of the 8 Q rule while I lived in Cook
Co. I played on 2m FM for an extended period of time trying to get
people. I can tell you that finding 8 people on 2 FM would be a great
accomplishment in Cook. Now, if you have a repeater club and you can get
some of them motivated you might be able to make a dozen q's if you really
beat the drum hard. It is not an advantage IMO. Where the rule can be an
advantage is in the slow periods. Grab someone within a few miles and work
them 160 - 2 both modes. You dont have to switch freq for CW as there is
no rule for CW in the CW portion only. You can log 16 q's and 2 extra
mults if you do that. However, this does take alot of time. I felt like
I busted my butt for 8 hours yesterday and only got 4 mults from the 8 q
rule. I think I made 10 q's on 6 and 2 total. YMMV
As for start time, I would agree an earlier start might be better for
everyone. It would give some additional time to the upper bands as they go
away so quickly at this time in the cycle. Also, the mobiles would not
get home at the crack of dawn. Without the mobiles, the fixed stations
would be bored to death. We need to do as much to encourage them as
possible as they are the backbone to this event.
I guess the most important thing is activity. If we recruited more people
for the IQP, maybe that last hour wouldn't be so slow?
Still working on the log approx 420 q's and 45K.
