My understanding is that you are correct. At least with ham plates, one ear
can be covered. A ham in the Chicago area (I've forgotten who) told me he
had a copy of the statute with him in his car. I know, this falls under the
category of "hearsay"; it's the best I can do.
As for horror stories, I'd say to be sure you get well off the road when
parked, and park in a lighted spot when possible.
