Subject: UPDATE ON HB 3970/3972

I want to thank all of you for the universally motivated reaction to the subject bills. The position of the League is that there is no evidence that mobile Amateur Radio operation contributes to driver inattention, and regulation of mobile electronics should acknowledge that lack of evidence by excepting Amateur Radio specifically. That said, our current situation is that both bills are in committee for hearings. It appears that this will take some time and is being monitored by our SGL Charlie Richey K9DUE and others in the Capitol. I get daily reports from them which are encouraging. Our goal is to see one bill (as they are
slightly redundant) pass from committee with an amendment excepting Amateur Radio, which is what our folks are advocating on your behalf.

What can you do? Join me in 'wait and see'. At this time, there is no need for a general letter and phone call campaign as the bills are not up for consideration generally. I will keep you posted on our progress. Again, I thank you for the overwhelmingly positive responses. The folks at HQ support us in these efforts with counsel and advice. Ultimately and in the tradition of other advocacy organizations such as AARP, NRA, and hundreds of others, the League's strength is in individuals like you who are willing to help me advocate this great Service.

73 and thank you again.
