Dear Cook County ARES® Members and Friends:

With the arrival of our beautiful Spring weather,
it's once again Ham Radio Public Service Event
season!

PLEASE COME OUT AND VOLUNTEER. WE NEED YOU!

On Saturday 11 June, hams from a dozen counties
and at least two states will be helping with the
Ragnar Relay--Chicago. This is a relay race that
extends about 200 miles from Madison WI to
Chicago. Although the race is a continuation of
the Madison-Chicago 200 and Great Midwest Relay
races in which hams have assisted for several
years, the race is nearly twice as large as last
year, and the availability of general volunteers
means that hams can focus on communications.
Thus, for ham volunteers, it's a whole new race.

In Cook County, we need people in Glencoe,
Evanston, and Chicago. Please contact me, N9NL,
to volunteer. (If you prefer to volunteer in Lake
County or in Wisconsin, please let me know, and
I'll get you to the right person.)

In addition to the Ragnar Relay in June, I'd like
to let you know about some additional public
service opportunities, including the KENDALL
COUNTY CARES CLINIC THIS WEEKEND, SATURDAY MAY 21:

Sat May 21 Kendall County Cares Clinic
Sun Jun 05 Udder Century Invitational Bike Ride--Union IL
  Sat Jun 11 Ragnar Relay--Chicago
Sun Jun 12 Tour de Cure for Diabetes--Wheaton

KENDALL COUNTY CARES CLINIC

Date: May 21
Location: Plano Illinois
Event: Kendal County CARES Clinic

E-mail and more info: <http://pages.ripco.net/~ormos/kccares-2011.html>

Kendall County ARES has been asked to assist with
communications for the Kendall County Cares Clinic
in Plano on May 21 between 8AM and 2PM. The clinic
has been designed to help provide those in
economic need with various services and assistance
that they might not otherwise be able to
afford. Churches, food pantries, government
agencies, medical facilities and businesses are
coming together to provide these services.

KCARES assisted with last year's clinic, which was
the first of its kind in Kendall County.
Organizers will be promoting the event more
aggressively this year, and since the economic
climate hasn't gotten much better, attendance will
be higher.

Organizers are going to provide a light breakfast
and some type of lunch for the volunteers. All
activity will take place on the grounds of Plano
High School, and our operations will be conducted
on 2 meter simplex. A portable with an extra
battery should be all that's needed.

One of the challenges we face is that this year's
Clinic is on Dayton Hamvention weekend. So, if
you're not heading to Ohio, and still need to get
your ham radio "fix", how about lending a hand?

RAGNAR RELAY CHICAGO (RCC)

Date: June 11 (Sat)
Location: Chicago, Evanston, Glencoe and others
Event: Ragnar Relay--Chicago (RCC)
          Relay Race
Contact: Neil Ormos N9NL (Cook County)

The Ragnar Relay--Chicago (RCC) is a really
unique, team running relay race that spans 200
miles and two states. This requires a really
special communications team to cover this amount
of real estate. This event will use the same
assets as a two day, two state emergency
communications operation.

This unique 200 mile, team adventure running relay
race begins early morning on Friday, June 10th in
Madison, Wisconsin, continues for approximately 30
hours and finishes on Saturday afternoon, June
11th in Chicago, Illinois.

Although the race is a continuation of
the Madison-Chicago 200 and Great Midwest Relay
races in which hams have assisted for several
years, the race is nearly twice as large as last
year, and the availability of general volunteers
means that hams can focus on communications.
Thus, for ham volunteers, it's a whole new race.

This will be the seventh year that this major,
national event is being held in the Midwest.

This is a wonderful opportunity for all licensed
radio operators as communicators for this exercise
regardless of your experience. We will need many,
many volunteers for help with the preparation as
well as the actual event in June.

In Cook County, we need people in Glencoe,
Evanston, and Chicago. Please contact me, N9NL,
to volunteer. (If you prefer to volunteer in Lake
County or in Wisconsin, please let me know, and
I'll get you to the right person.)

Amateur Radio will again be supporting the
American Diabetes Assn. with their 'Tour de Cure'
fundraising event. We could still use a few more
operators for the ADA Chicago Tour de Cure on
Sunday June 12th. New courses and rest stops have
been added this year. The start/finish is at
Wheaton/Warrenville South HS in Wheaton.

We are responsible for:

- Helping to provide SAG (Support and Gear)
  service for the ride

- Staffing the rest stops to provide
communications to and from the start/finish.

- Shadowing ride officials to keep in touch with
  our comm. Team

- Providing advance notice of possible severe
weather and helping to implement plans to keep
  riders safe.
